Chasing 344, Pakistan were reeling at 37-2, with opener Imam-ul Haq and skipper Babar Azam back in the pavilion. Mohammad Rizwan came at No.4 and resurrected the run-chase with a 176-partnership with opener Abdullah Shafique. Shafique, who replaced an out-of-form Fakhar Zaman, played a brilliant hand with a knock of 113 off 103 balls.
In his typical fidgety and busy style, Rizwan kept the scoreboard ticking with occasional boundaries here and there. The wicketkeeper-batter has been going through a rich vein of form, hitting five fifties in his last six outings. While batting on 83, he gave Sri Lanka off-spinner Dhananjaya de Silva the charge, smashing hit over long-off. In the next moment, while in his follow-through, Rizwan fell to the ground in pain. The toil and humidity had taken a toll on his body as he was seen suffering from cramps.
Later, he brought up his century in the 42nd over and kissed the ground in celebration, thanking the almighty. Rizwan became the second wicketkeeper-batter from Pakistan to hit a century in the World Cup. Sarfaraz Ahmed was the other player to do so against Ireland in 2015.
Babar’s men pull off the highest-ever run-chase in the quadrennial clashes with a six-wicket win against Sri Lanka today. Rizwan finished on 134 off 121 balls.
