The New Zealand all-rounder is no stranger when it comes to pulling off spectacular catches in the field. He showcased his fielding prowess once again in today’s World Cup fixture against Afghanistan.

On the last ball of the 13th over, pacer Lockie Ferguson bowled a short ball directed at Shahidi. The skipper mistimed the pull as the ball ballooned up in the air. Initially, it seemed that the ball would fall short of the closest fielder, which was Santner. However, the acrobatic fielder chased it with all his might. He leapt off his feat, backpedalling and throwing his body to his left. The next moment, he plucked the ball out of thin air while still off the ground. His pyrotechnics ended Shahidi’s scratchy innings of 8 (29). Afghanistan slipped to 43-3.

Sunil Gavaskar described the catch as being “out of this world”.

Earlier, New Zealand posted 288-6 after being sent to bat first. Tom Latham (68) and Glenn Phillips (71) resurrected their innings after a collapse reduced them to 110-4 from 109-1 in nine balls.
