At 144-3 at the end of 20 overs, New Zealand were cruising in their bid to gun down 171 runs rapidly to tilt the semi-final qualifications scenario heavily in their favour. Daryl Mitchell, then batting on 35 from 24 balls, was in a hurry to boost their net run rate along with Mark Chapman, who freshly arrived at the crease.
On the third ball of the 21st over, Chapman tried to muscle a boundary off a full-length delivery on his pads but miscued it. The ball rolled towards short third after hitting his back leg.
Mitchell immediately called for a single from the non-striker’s end, and Chapman responded initially before turning it down. By then, Mitchell had almost reached the other end.
Chapman selflessly allowed his partner to get in as he walked back to the pavilion in disappointment, without even waiting for Angelo Mathews to dislodge the bails at the bowler’s end.
Mitchell himself fell for a 31-ball 43, but New Zealand won by five wickets inside 24 overs to as good as seal the fourth semi-final berth.
