Electing to bat first after winning the toss, Sri Lanka were on a roll against Pakistan. A steady 51 (61) from opener Pathum Nissanka gave them a solid base. However, the pick of the batters was Mendis as his blitzkrieg stunned the Pakistan attack. He belted the bowlers all over the park to bring up his ton off 65 deliveries, the fastest by a Sri Lankan player in a World Cup.

Hassan, who was called up to the Pakistan World Cup squad at the last minute, was at the receiving end numerous times during Mendis’s onslaught. Coming on to bowl the 28th over, he pitched a back-of-a-length delivery on the off-stump. Mendis mowed it over wide long-on on for a glorious six.

Things panned out similarly in the next delivery. Hassan tried to deliver a slower ball, but Mendis caressed him over extra-cover for another maximum. The bowler was in disbelief. He struck back with his next ball, Mendis holing out to Imam-ul-Haq on the rope

Sri Lanka posted 344-9 after a century from Sadeera Samarawickrama gave them a late flourish.
