Pakistan had stumbled to 206-5 in the 42nd over when Iftikhar walked in to bat with Shadab Khan already at the crease. The big-hitter had not starred in the World Cup with scores of 9, 22*, 4 and 26 in four games, but came to the party against Afghanistan, ending with 40 in 27 balls with the help of four sixes and two fours.

The first maximum came in the 45th over off Rashid, which helped in breaking down the shackles. The full-length ball drifted in, which saw Iftikhar go down on one leg and smack it over cow corner for his first maximum of the game.
