Kusal Mendis, stepping in for the injured Dasun Shanaka, won the toss and opted to bat. Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera opened the batting, while Mitchell Starc took first ball.

Bowling from over the wicket, Starc began with a peach of a yorker. Nissanka brought the bat down, but had not accounted for the swing, and was struck on the pad.

It did not look out, but Pat Cummins reviewed for leg-before. UltraEdge revealed that the bat had hit the bat, while ball-tracking showed that it had also pitched outside the leg stump – in other words, Australia were wrong in at least two counts.

It went on to hurt Australia later on, with an lbw appeal off the bowling of Glenn Maxwell not reviewed, despite replays showing it would have been overturned if it had been sent upstairs.
