Maxwell walked out to bat at No.6 in the 39th over of the innings but faced his first ball only in the 41st over. He went on to play a whirlwind knock of 106 in only 44 balls with the help of eight sixes. He reached his fifty in 27 balls with a brilliant reverse sweep, getting to the milestone for the first time in 16 innings.

The second ball of the 47th over by Bas de Leede was full and on the stumps, but Maxwell got under it and reverse-swept it for a six. He reversed again two balls later, scooping a short delivery for another six as he continued his onslaught.

Maxwell needed only 13 balls to move from 50 to 100 and broke Aiden Markram’s record for the fastest World Cup hundred by nine balls. Markram scored a hundred in 49 deliveries against Sri Lanka in South Africa’s opening game of the World Cup this year. It was also the fourth-fastest hundred in men’s ODIs, after AB de Villiers (31 balls), Corey Anderson (36) and Shahid Afridi (37).

Led by centuries from Maxwell and David Warner (104 in 93), Australia ended with 399-8 as they look for their third straight win in a row.
