Australia were sent in to bat first by their rivals England. They lost wickets at regular intervals, but on a slow surface kept the runs ticking over at a healthy rate. Coming at 117-4, Green stitched a 61-run stand with Marnus Labuschagne (71 off 83) in a period of consolidation for the five-time world champions.

Green tried to pull England quick Mark Wood off the penultimate ball of the 31st over. He miscued the shot and lost the grip of the bat in the process. The flying bat almost hit square-leg umpire Chris Gaffaney. Three England fielders, including Wood closed in on the ballooned-up ball. However, they were unsuccessful as the ball landed between the approaching fielders.

The all-rounder departed for a well-made 47 runs off 52 balls while trying to ramp David Willey.
