Asked to bat at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, India recovered from 40-3 to post 229-9 as Rohit Sharma made 87, KL Rahul 39, and Suryakumar Yadav 49. For England, David Willey claimed 3-45.
England began well to reach 30-0 in 4.4 overs before Jasprit Bumrah bowled Dawid Malan and trapped Joe Root leg-before off consecutive balls. At the other end, Mohammed Shami replaced Mohammed Siraj, who had hurt his hand.
Only three runs came off the next two overs. Then Shami beat Stokes’ outside edge with the first ball. Stokes, scoreless after five balls, tried to hit his way out but did not time his shot. Still on strike, Stokes middled the next ball, but it went to cover.
Stokes tried to defend the next ball, but the ball pitched on a length and moved away, beating the outside edge again. Stokes did middle the next ball, but without any run.
After facing nine dot balls, Stokes had perhaps made up his mind. He cleared his front foot to go for an almighty slog against a ball that was not in the slot, and was bowled.
Shami soon cleaned up Jonny Bairstow, while Kuldeep Yadav bowled Jos Buttler. At the time of writing, England were 67-5 in 19 overs with Moeen Ali on 10 and Liam Livingstone on 11.
