Netherlands started their 2023 World Cup campaign on a good note, taking three quick wickets to put Pakistan on the backfoot. However, a 120-run fourth-wicket partnership between Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan brought Pakistan right back in the game.
At 158-4 from 28.1 overs, Pakistan had a solid foundation for the death overs with Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed at the crease. De Leede came on to bowl the 32nd over of the innings and was treated to a cracking on-drive by Rizwan from his second ball.
De Leede, however, held his own, and answered back with a stunning in-seamer that ripped through Rizwan’s defences to leave the Pakistan wicketkeeper in a state of disbelief. The next ball was struck for another four by the new batter Mohammad Nawaz. but there was more to come.
On the last ball of the over, de Leede got Iftikhar to nudge at a back of length ball outside off and he was caught behind in the process, handing Pakistan a major double-blow and reducing them to 188-6 from 182-4.
Netherlands’ joy was short-lived though as the seventh-wicket pair of Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz stitched together a 64-run partnership to take Pakistan beyond 250. Their partnership was eventually broken by de Leede himself as he came back in the 44th over to knock over Shadab’s stumps in a similar manner to that of Rizwan.
