Angelo Mathews was called up to Sri Lanka’s World Cup squad after injury ruled Matheesha Pathirana out of the rest of the tournament. He was straight into their XI for the match against England, his first ODI since March this year.

He was brought onto bowl in the powerplay, and Jonny Bairstow took a single off his first ball before Dawid Malan played out a dot from his second. Mathews bowled his third sliding across the left-hander, which Malan pushed at outside his off-stump. The ball passed close to the bat and straight through to Kusal Mendis behind the stumps, who threw the ball up in celebration straight away.

The umpire was unmoved, but Mendis opted for the review straight away. UltraEdge showed a big nick on Malan’s outside edge and he had to walk back to the dressing room for 28 off 25.

The wicket started an almighty top order collapse for England, with Joe Root run out inside the powerplay also by Mathews. They fell to 85-5 in the 17th over, continuing their disastrous competition.
