England’s horror run at the 2023 World Cup continued as they slid from 45-0 to 137-8 against Sri Lanka at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium after opting to bat. No.9 David Willey and No.10 Adil Rashid then pushed the score to 147.

At this point, Maheesh Theekshana bowled a wide down the leg-side to Willey. Having left the crease as per habit, Rashid did not make any serious attempt to return to the crease at the non-striker’s end.

Kusal Mendis, the Sri Lankan captain, gathered the ball behind the stumps, noticed Rashid outside the crease, and threw the stumps down with a direct hit. Summoned for help, TV umpire Ahsan Raza ruled Rashid run out.

“Mendis is very sharp out there,” praised Russel Arnold on air, praising his “presence of mind”, while Ian Ward labelled Rashid’s effort as “dopey”.

England were soon bowled out for 156. For Sri Lanka, Lahiru Kumara claimed 3-35, Angelo Mathews 2-14, and Kasun Rajitha 2-36. For England, Ben Stokes top-scored with 43. At the time of writing, Sri Lanka were 9-1 in 1.5 overs.
