Asked to bat in Delhi, Afghanistan were all out for 284. Rahmanullah Gurbaz made a 57-ball 80 at the top, while Ikram Alikhil got a 66-ball 58. The England spinners, Adil Rashid (3-42), Liam Livingstone (1-33), and Joe Root (1-19), combined to return 24-1-94-5.
England slipped to 68-3 in response when Jos Buttler joined Harry Brook in the middle. The pair pushed the score to 91-3.
Afghanistan had opened bowling with Mujeeb-ur-Rahman and Fazalhaq Farooqi. Coming in as first change, Naveen-ul-Haq had already bowled a maiden to Buttler.
While playing for Lucknow Super Giants at the 2023 IPL, Naveen had a spat with Virat Kohli during their match against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Chants of “Kohli, Kohli” had accompanied Naveen when he had run in to bowl during Afghanistan’s previous match in the tournament, against India at the same venue.
The two made up that day, but there was no respite for Naveen today. The chants were back, amidst which Brook mistimed the first ball of the next over and ran a single. As Naveen ran in again, the crowd began to chant.
At this point, Buttler moved away, and play was held up for a few seconds, presumably for a sight-screen adjustment.
Naveen eventually charged in and bowled from wide of the crease. The ball came in and broke through Buttler’s defence – he had left an enormous gap between bat and pad – to hit the stumps.
At the time of writing, England were 190-8 with Adil Rashid and Mark Wood at the crease.
