New Zealand chose to field first after winning the toss in Dharamsala, a move that they would have regretted instantly as David Warner and Travis Head put on an assault for the ages, taking Australia off to a flier.

After the first two overs fetched 14 runs, Head and Warner unleashed their fury onto Matt Henry in the third. The first ball was pulled over square leg for a six by Warner as he collapsed his back knee onto the floor. The second ball was a no-ball where the batters exchanged strike.

Head, returning to the Australia XI after having recovered from a broken hand, grabbed the opportunity to get a head-start with both hands. The free-hit delivery, a length ball on the stumps, was slogged for a huge six over cow corner. As it turned out, Henry had over-stepped again, resulting in the next ball being another free hit.

This time Henry attempted a bouncer, but the result was no different. Head was waiting on his backfoot as he hooked it over mid-wicket for the third six in two legal deliveries. Australia had raced off to 35-0 from 2.2 overs after being 14-0 two balls earlier.

The pair didn’t stop as they reached 50 in 4.1 overs and 100 in 8.5. Both Warner and Head reached their respective individual half-centuries as well as Australia’s score read 146-0 after 14 overs.
