Put into bat after losing the toss, New Zealand’s innings started off in record slow fashion as the Netherlands bowlers bowled three consecutive maiden overs to start the game.It was only the second occasion in men’s ODI World Cup history that an innings started with three maiden overs.
However, New Zealand caught up soon after, as Devon Conway and Will Young went on an assault. After the first ten overs, their score read 63-0. Conway was the first to go, scoring 32 off 40, while Young top-scored with 70 off 80.
New Zealand’s middle order came good after not getting an opportunity to bat in their first game against England. Rachin Ravindra scored another half-century, Daryl Mitchell scored 48 off 47, while captain Tom Latham scored 53 off 46.
With 301-7 at the end of 49 overs, the score was already looking good for New Zealand before Santner provided a nitro boost in the last over.
Eight runs were scored off the first five balls. What was supposed to be the last ball of the innings turned out to be a waist-high no-ball by Bas de Leede. Santner stood his ground and flayed it over point with both feet in the air for six.
De Leede bowled another full toss, this time a low one for the free hit delivery. Santner was up to the task once again, depositing it over long-on for six this time to finish New Zealand’s innings with 13 runs off the last legitimate delivery.
New Zealand finished on 322-7 and Santner remained unbeaten on 36 of 17.
