The Proteas are bidding to make their first men’s ODI World Cup final having made the semi-finals four times before. They have twice lost against Australia in the semi-finals of the competition, in 1999 and 2007, and this will be their first knockout appearance since 2015. They finished level on points with Australia in the group stage but took a higher position in the table due to their NRR.

Australia on the other hand are five-time men’s ODI World Cup champions, and appearing in the knockout stage of the competition for the seventh edition in a row. They lost in the semi-final to England in the last edition, registering their first semi-final defeat.

After a poor start to the competition with losses against India and South Africa in their opening matches, Australia have built some strong momentum. They won all of their last seven games of the group stage and racked-up some huge win margins. Glenn Maxwell’s contributions have been key for the side, most notably his exceptional double-hundred against Afghanistan but also his world record knock against the Netherlands, where he scored 106 off 44 balls.

The winner of the match will face India in the final in Ahmedabad on Sunday, November 19. India thumped New Zealand by 70 runs at the Wankhede to reach another home final.
