In the history of the World Cup, India have won four and lost four against Sri Lanka. 1992 was the only time a meeting between the two sides ended with no result, as rain washed out the game. During their most recent face-off in the Asia Cup 2023 final, India skittled Sri Lanka out for just 50 runs thanks to Mohammad Siraj’s 6-21, before gunning down the target with 43.5 overs to spare.

India are the only unbeaten side in the tournament, and have a positive net run-rate (NRR) of +2.290. Only South Africa, with six wins in their seven outings, are ahead of them courtesy of their superior NRR. They are just a win away from securing a semi-final berth.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s semi-final dream has taken a beating after their seven-wicket loss against Afghanistan. They are placed seventh on the points table with two wins from six games. The 1996 champions need to win their remaining three fixtures against the hosts, Bangladesh and New Zealand and depend on the other results to have an outside chance of securing a spot in the top four.
