South Africa have named their provisional squad for the 2023 ICC World Cup. Here is the full SA team list, with player news and injury updates.
There were no major surprises in South Africa’s squad for the upcoming World Cup, to be hosted by India between October 5 and November 19, 2023.
Temba Bavuma will lead the squad, and they have a deep batting line-up, boasting of Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, and Reeza Hendricks. Of them, de Kock and Klaasen keep wicket.
One interesting aspect of the South African unit is the depth of their pace attack. Apart from the usual suspects – Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi, all-rounder Marco Jansen – they have also got Sisanda Magala and Gerald Coetzee.
This is in stark contrast with their spin attack, which comprises their usual left-arm specialists, finger-spinner Keshav Maharaj and wrist-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi, while Markram can fill in with his off breaks.
South Africa begin their World Cup on October 7, with a match against New Zealand at Delhi, while their league stage ends with the clash against Afghanistan on November 10 at Ahmedabad. On October 21 and 24, they play twice in Mumbai, against England and Bangladesh.
South Africa had a very ordinary campaign in 2019, winning three of their eight decided matches to finish seventh. Of the first eight teams to get ICC Full Membership status, South Africa remain the only one to have never reached a men’s World Cup final.
