Afridi has been in ominous touch in the ongoing World Cup. With 16 wickets, he is the joint highest-wicket taker in the event, along with Australian tweaker Adam Zampa. The lanky left-arm pacer helped Pakistan to stay afloat in the semi-finals race with match-winning figures of 3-29 against Bangladesh on October 31. He gained nine places owing to his purple patch to be crowned the numero uno bowler for the first time.
Josh Hazlewood (second), Mohammad Siraj and Keshav Maharaj slipped one spot each because of Afridi’s seven-place giant leap.
Meanwhile, spinners Kuldeep Yadav (seventh) and Mujeeb Ur Rahman (eighth) are the other players to make inroads inside the top 10 courtesy of their two-spot jumps.
In the batting rankings, Babar Azam kept his place at the top with 818 points, but the narrow gap with the next-best Gill came down to just two points because of the former’s poor outing with the bat against Bangladesh. Babar has accumulated 216 runs from seven innings in World Cup 2023 while averaging a below-par 30.85 and striking at 77.69. His competitor Gill hasn’t lit up the show either, managing just 104 runs from four innings.
David Warner jumped one place to occupy the fourth position, thanks to his 413 runs at the World Cup, while India captain Rohit Sharma rose by three spots owing to his blazing 398 runs in the event to grab the fifth spot.
Shakib Al Hasan remained the top-ranked all-rounder, while South Africa’s beanpole Marco Jansen moved by two slots to sit in the ninth position.
