Shaheen Afridi, who has not had the best tournament thus far, picking up four wickets in three games, urged his skipper Babar Azam to go for a review on the very first ball of the match against Australia. Bowling to David Warner, Shaheen sent a ball that beat his shot and thudded into his pads.

Shaheen was convinced that, while there were two noises, it hit the pads first, and appealed to Babar to take the DRS after the on-field umpire ruled Warner not out. Babar, in two minds and after a long chat with the wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan and the bowler, went up for a late review and ended up losing it straightaway as UltraEdge showed a huge inside edge.

On commentary, Waqar Younis suggested that Shaheen was aware that the batter had nicked it, but went up in celebration straightaway in a bid to “fox the umpire.” “Shaheen knew it [that it was an inside edge] and he just wanted to fox the umpire. But I’m not sure why Shaheen was so persistent and really ran to the wicketkeeper, literally forcing the captain to take the review”

Australia got off to a blazing start, making 37 in the first six overs of the game, with Pakistan also dropping an easy catch upfront.
