Mohammad Shami and Jasprit Bumrah powered through England’s batting lineup, both taking two wickets in as many balls to reduce England to 39-4. Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah then mopped up the middle-order to bowl England out for 129.
Jos Buttler had won the toss and put India into bat, naming an unchanged XI from their loss against Sri Lanka. India were also unchanged from their win over New Zealand, Hardik Pandya still out of the side with injury. It was slow going for India at the top, with Shubman Gill falling in the fourth over before Virat Kohli was dismissed for a duck. But Rohit Sharma scored a superb 87 off 101 to lead his side to a defendable score 229-9.

England have now lost five of their six matches at the 2023 World Cup, their only win coming against Bangladesh in their second match. While not yet mathematically discounted from the competition, they have to hope for very fortunate results to qualify for the knockouts.
India are the only unbeaten side in the tournament and have all-but sealed their place in the semi-finals. They have 12 points from six games and a favourable net run rate of +1.405. Their closest rivals are South Africa on ten points but with a huge net run rate of +2.032.
England’s next game in the tournament is against Australia on Saturday, November 4 at Ahmedabad, while India will play Sri Lanka at Mumbai on Thursday, November 2.
