On November 5 at the Eden Gardens, India beat South Africa by 243 runs. This is now India’s biggest margin of victory against South Africa while batting first by a considerable margin, eclipsing the 153-run margin from Dhaka 2003 and Gwalior 2009/10.

Batting first, India got off to a rollicking start, thanks to Rohit Sharma’s 24-ball 40 on a tricky surface. India raced to 91-1 in the powerplay. Keshav Maharaj then produced a peach to bowl Shubman Gill (23 in 24 balls), but Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer added 134 for the third wicket.

Iyer eventually fell for a 77-ball 87, but Kohli batted until the end to finish on 101 not out from 121 balls. With this, he equalled Sachin Tendulkar’s world record of 49 ODI hundreds.

Suryakumar Yadav (22 in 14 balls) and Ravindra Jadeja (29 not out in 15) hit out towards the end to take India to 326-5. For South Africa, Maharaj bowled beautifully for his 1-30, while Kagiso Rabada also claimed 1-48.

South African response never got going, and once they collapsed from 22-1 to 40-5 in the space of less than five overs, the match was headed for a one-sided contest. Only four South Africans reached double figures, but none of them made it to 15.

For India, Jadeja finished with 5-33, while Mohammed Siraj (1-11), Mohammed Shami (2-18), and Kuldeep Yadav (2-7) shared the other wickets. South Africa collapsed to 83, their lowest ODI total against India.

With this, India have now extended their winning streak to eight matches. With 16 points, they are assured of the top spot in the points table. South Africa are still at second place, with 12 points from eight matches, though Australia, two points behind them, have a match in hand.
