Asked to bat at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, India found themselves in trouble at 40-3 before Rohit Sharma (87 in 101 balls) and KL Rahul (39 in 58) added 91 for the third wicket.
Rohit, in particular, produced a masterclass on a pitch where the ball gripped from time to time. There was also considerable turn for the spinners.
Suryakumar Yadav (49 in 47 balls) then pushed India past the 2oo-run mark before. The long tail did not get going, but they batted out the 50 overs to help India reach 229-9. For England, David Willey claimed 3-45, Chris Woakes 2-33, and Adil Rashid 2-45.
The England openers added 30 in 28 balls before Jasprit Bumrah (3-32) struck with consecutive deliveries. Mohammed Shami (4-22) had two in two as well, and England were suddenly 39-4. Kuldeep Yadav (2-29) joined in as well, and England collapsed to 129.
Eight England batters reached double figures, but of them, Liam Livingstone (27 in 46 balls) was the only one to go past 16.
With six wins in as many matches, India have as good as qualified for the semi-finals. With five defeats in six matches and a net run rate of -1.652, England are as good as out of the race. However, neither India’s qualification nor England’s elimination is a mathematical certainty yet.
England will also have their eyes on the 2025 Champions Trophy. Apart from hosts Pakistan, only the top seven teams at the 2023 World Cup will make it to that tournament.
