India opener Shubman Gill has become the No.1 ranked ODI batter in the world, overtaking Pakistan captain Babar Azam for the top spot.

The 23-year-old Gill has had a tremendous 2023, becoming the youngest ever to score a men’s ODI double century in January. He currently leads the batting charts in the format this year, having hit five centuries and seven fifties as he nears 1,500 ODI runs in 2023.
Babar Azam occupied the top spot for 952 days, but Gill’s rapid ascent closed the gap between the two, with Gill overtaking Babar just ahead of the knockout stages of the World Cup. At the tournament, Gill also became the fastest batter to 2,000 men’s ODI runs.
He is only the fourth India player after Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli to climb to the top of the men’s ODI rankings.
It’s an all-India presence at the top of the rankings: they are the No.1 ranked team, Mohammed Siraj is the No.1 bowler, and now Gill has secured the top batting spot.
In the bowling rankings, Rashid Khan moved one spot up to No.7, pushing Jasprit Bumrah down one spot. Mohammed Shami and Trent Boult also moved into the top 10.
In the all-rounders ranking, Glenn Maxwell moved four places up to sixth.
