The official schedule for the 2023 ODI World Cup was first announced by the ICC on June 27 after much deliberation and several revisions of draft versions.
With less than two months to go now before the start of the first match – scheduled to take place on October 5 – the ICC have revised the schedule once again, with the most hotly awaited contest between India and Pakistan being preponed along with a few other changes.
India-Pakistan fixture on October 14
In the original version of the schedule that was released on June 27, the India-Pakistan clash was supposed to take place on October 15 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. However, it has now been moved to October 14 after objections were raised by the local police for the original fixture date as it would have clashed with the first day of Navratri, a highly anticipated nine-day long annual festival in Gujarat.
Other rescheduled games
A total of nine fixtures have been rescheduled.
England’s match against Afghanistan, which was originally scheduled on October 14, has been postponed to October 15. The other game originally scheduled on October 14, New Zealand vs Bangladesh, has been preponed to October 13 instead and will now be played as a day-night game as opposed to the originally scheduled day game in Chennai.
Pakistan v Sri Lanka which was originally scheduled on October 12, has been moved ahead to October 10, as was expected, while Australia’s much-anticipated clash against South Africa has been rescheduled to a day earlier and will now be played on October 12 instead of October 13.
The other major changes that have happened are towards the latter stage of the tournament. The originally scheduled matches on November 12: Australia vs Bangladesh in Pune, and England vs Pakistan in Kolkata, have now been shifted to November 11, a Saturday, while India’s game against the Netherlands, which was scheduled on Saturday (November 11), has been moved to Sunday (November 12), essentially swapping the games on the two days.
The only other change is that England’s October 10 clash against Bangladesh in Dharamshala has now been converted into a day game instead of a day-night one.
