Afghanistan created history at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Sunday (October 15) by defeating defending champions England by 69 runs. Having won only one game in their last two ICC ODI World Cup campaigns combined, not a lot of people had given Afghanistan a chance against the defending champions.

Batting first, they put up a competitive total of 284 on the board before employing their trademark spin-choke in the second innings as England crumbled under pressure to get bundled out for 215.

A packed Arun Jaitley Stadium, with more Afghan supporters than English, celebrated as they witnessed history unfold in front of them. Among those who enjoyed Afghanistan’s victory was a young ball-boy who was seen weeping and hugging Mujeeb Ur Rahman after the match.

Soon, clips of the kid went viral on social media with people mentioning, “This is what it means to Afghans.” However, Mujeeb made a social media post today (October 17) where he clarified that the weeping kid whom he hugged was indeed an Indian boy who was supporting Afghanistan.

“It’s not Afghani boy it’s one young Indian boy so happy for ur (our) win. It was absolute pleasure meeting this little guy from India Delhi last night (Cricket is not just a game it’s an emotion),” wrote Mujeeb.

Mujeeb, who was the Player of the Match for his 3-51 while bowling and 28 (16) while batting, also thanked the Delhi crowd in general, showing his gratitude for their support. “Big thank you to all our amazing fans for coming down and supporting us last night the love and support is overwhelming. We are grateful for your continuous support and we can’t wait for you to keep supporting us in the future❤🙌 thanks for love Delhi,” said Mujeeb.

Afghanistan now head over to Chennai for their next match against New Zealand tomorrow (October 18).
