Gill, who missed India’s opening fixture against Australia due to dengue, is all set to be out of the reckoning for India’s second game as well.
BCCI released a medical update on Gill mentioning that he is scheduled to stay back in Chennai under the supervision of the medical team and won’t be travelling with the Indian squad to Delhi, where they are scheduled to face Afghanistan in their next game.
Gill has had a wonderful year with the bat in ODIs, amassing over 1,200 runs at an average of 72.35 with five centuries and five half-centuries. India played Ishan Kishan as an opener in Gill’s place against Australia but the left-hander fell for a golden duck on his World Cup debut.
In fact, three of India’s top four fell for ducks against Australia as they got off to the worst start in their ODI history, losing three wickets for two runs. Gill, India’s most in-form batter in ODIs this year, was missed.
Unfortunately for India, they will have to continue missing him for the next game at least, as he hasn’t recovered enough to travel with the team to Delhi, meaning Kishan will get another go at the top in all probability.
Despite the early scare against Australia, India were able to get the job done and get over the line in their run-chase of 200 as Virat Kohli and KL Rahul registered a classy partnership of 165 runs for the fourth wicket. However, India would ideally like to not put themselves in a similar position going ahead in the tournament where they lose early wickets in a cluster and Gill’s presence will be important to facilitate that.
For now, they’ll have to adapt and make do without him.
