Eoin Morgan fractured his left index finger on Friday, an X-ray has revealed, which will rule him out of the warm-up match against Australia on Saturday.

The England captain is, however, expected to be fit for the World Cup opener against South Africa on Thursday at The Oval.

“Eoin Morgan took a knock to his left index finger fielding this morning,” a short statement from the ECB read earlier today. “He is going to hospital after practice for a precautionary x-ray.” The England captain was injured during routine catching drills.

Morgan has been instrumental in England’s advancement in ODI cricket in recent years and the tournament favourites will be eager to have their skipper fit and firing for their opening clash at the Oval.
