West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell has been ruled out of the Cricket World Cup after persistent knee trouble limited his game-time during the tournament.
Russell came into the tournament on the back of a blistering IPL campaign for the Kolkata Knight Riders, in which he claimed the Player of the Series award after a series of electrifying batting performances, scoring 510 runs at a strike-rate of 204.81 as well as picking up 11 wickets.
He was tipped to star on his return to ODI cricket after a prolonged absence from the format and bowled a fiery three-over spell in the West Indies’ first match, in which he claimed two wickets for just four runs as Pakistan collapsed against short-pitched bowling.
Russell then took 2-41 against Australia but injury began to take over and he was forced to sit out long spells in the field after hitting the deck when bowling, returning to take the wicket of Alex Carey despite obvious concern. The all-rounder then did not feature in the rained off encounter with South Africa or the thrilling final-ball encounter with New Zealand on Saturday, ending the tournament with five wickets and just 36 runs from four games.

Sunil Ambris has been called up as his replacement to the squad. The batsman has played just six ODIs, but featured in all of West Indies’ games against Ireland at Malahide, averaging 92.67 as well as hitting a career-best 148 opening the batting in the fourth match of the series.
