In the 2025 Champions Trophy final in Dubai, Rohit Sharma equalled the unwanted world record for most consecutive lost tosses in men’s ODIs.
New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and opted to bat at the 2025 Champions Trophy final in Dubai. This extended India’s world record streak of consecutive toss defeats in men’s ODIs to 15 – now four clear of the 11 by the Netherlands across 2011 and 2013.
India’s streak began when Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to field in the 2023 World Cup final. Rohit did not feature in the ODIs in South Africa that followed. KL Rahul led India instead – and lost all three tosses.
Rohit returned for the Sri Lanka tour in India’s only ODIs in 2024 – and lost all three tosses. In 2025, he lost all three again, this time in the home series against England, and then all five at the Champions Trophy that followed.
In the process, Rohit equalled Brian Lara’s record of 12, spread across 1998 and 1999. Lara’s streak was spread on either side of three ODIs in South Africa that he missed. Carl Hooper led the West Indies in these matches: he won the toss in the first but lost the other two. Peter Borren (11), who led the Netherlands in the abovementioned streak, is next.
