Watch: New Zealand star Kane Williamson was dismissed for his first single-digit ODI score in six years, when he fell for one against Pakistan in the Champions Trophy opener.
Tournament hosts Pakistan won the toss and chose to field first in Karachi as they welcomed fast bowler Haris Rauf back to the playing XI after a side strain. New Zealand were still without Rachin Ravindra.
Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman then left the field with an injury just two balls into the match, hurting himself while attempting to save a boundary. New Zealand made a steady start, but lost opener Devon Conway to Abrar Ahmed, bringing Williamson to the crease.
He got off the mark immediately, knocking Abrar for a single. But off the very first ball of the next over, disaster struck. Naseem Shah got a delivery to nip away just a touch off a good length, squaring Williamson up. The ball took a faint edge and went through to keeper-captain Mohammad Rizwan, sending the Black Caps star back for just one.
The last time Williamson was dismissed for a single-digit score in ODI cricket was on January 5, 2019 – over six years ago. Since then, he had averaged 61.2 from 36 innings in the format. Interestingly, Williamson began his ODI career with consecutive ducks, and had three in his first five innings, but has not been dismissed without scoring since February 2016 – a run of 76 innings.
