Glenn Phillips takes one-handed stunner in the Champions Trophy

Glenn Phillips added to his record of spectacular catches in the 2025 Champions Trophy opening match between Pakistan and New Zealand, with another one-handed stunner.

Fielding at backward point, Phillips reacted unfathomably quickly to pick up the ball off Mohammad Rizwan's bat, after the Pakistan captain cut a ball from Will O'Rourke behind square. Leaping to his left and with one hand stretched behind him, tracking the ball, Phillips managed to cling on as the ball hit his hand, and kept it safely in his clutches as he hit the turf on the way down from his dive.

As he got his feet, Phillips stood their in disbelief at his own effort, while several of his New Zealand teammates, including O'Rourke were visibly stunned by the catch. Rizwan had to walk back to the dressing room for a 14-ball 3 in a chase of 321.

While Phillips' effort was spectacular, it's the latest of a number of such catches he's pulled off over his international career. He took a similar catch in a Test match against England in Christchurch earlier this year, diving to his right on that occasion at gully. There was also a diving effort in the deep against Australia in the 2022 T20 World Cup, where he flew horizontally through the air, and one in a Test match against Australia last year, again at gully.

Phillips started his career as a wicketkeeper before transitioning into an all-rounder who bowls part-time off-spin. A livewire in the field, he went viral in 2022 for crouching like a sprinter in the blocks at the non-striker's end in the T20 World Cup.
