Watch: Glenn Phillips took yet another sensational catch to dismiss Shubman Gill, triggering India's collapse during their run chase of 252 against New Zealand in the Champions Trophy 2025 final in Dubai on Sunday (March 9).
Taking one-handed catches has now become business as usual for Phillips, having already done it on at least two occasions in this tournament. This one, however, could perhaps be the most important of the lot, as it brought New Zealand right back into the game after India were comfortably placed at 105 without any loss of wickets in 18.3 overs.
New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner floated the fourth delivery of the 19th over outside off. Gill, having played two dot balls previously, threw his bat at it, attempting to go over extra cover where Phillips was positioned. Phillips hurled himself into the air, stretched out his right hand while airborne, and plucked a one-handed stunner to end Gill's 50-ball stay at 31 runs. The hang time was what stood out on this occasion.
Just two balls later, Virat Kohli was pinned lbw by Michael Bracewell, leaving India at 106-2. Rohit Sharma, who set the tone for India's innings, perished soon for an 83-ball 76 while trying to give Rachin Ravindra the charge in the 27th over. At the time of Rohit's dismissal, India still needed 130 off 143 balls to win their third Champions Trophy title.
