At the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, Afghanistan and Australia faced off in an ODI for the first time since the 2023 World Cup – this time, in a virtual knockout match in Group B of the Champions Trophy.

Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi won the toss and chose to bat first, with Australia captain Steve Smith saying he would have elected to field first. Both sides named unchanged XIs from their previous matches, both against England (Australia's match against South Africa was washed out).
Left-armer Spencer Johnson opened the bowling for Australia, and struck off the fifth ball of the innings. Coming over the wicket to the right-handed Rahmanullah Gurbaz, he landed a yorker on off stump, shaping ever so slightly inwards, beating the bat and crashing into off-stump.
The broadcast commentators dubbed the dismissal "Starc-like", after senior paceman Mitchell Starc, who has made the inswinging yorker a trademark of his. He is not part of the Australian team for this tournament.
