South Africa lost stand-in skipper Aiden Markram to injury during the first innings against England in the Champions Trophy on Saturday (March 1).

Markram was captaining the Proteas in place of regular captain Temba Bavuma, who was ruled out of the match with an illness going around the camp. Opener Tony de Zorzi was also not playing because of the same issue. Heinrich Klaasen and Tristan Stubbs were the players who came into the lineup.

South Africa started brightly against an England side already eliminated from the tournament, getting rid of opener Phil Salt in the first over, and No.3 Jamie Smith in the third. After slipping to 37-3, Harry Brook and Joe Root put on 62 runs before Brook's dismissal triggered a slide from 99-3 to 129-7 as England's batters came and went quickly.

After the 29th over of the innings, it emerged that Markram had left the field with discomfort in his hamstring. A release from Cricket South Africa (CSA) soon afterwards stated: "Aiden Markram is experiencing discomfort in his right hamstring. As a precaution, he will not field for the remainder of the innings and will bat only if required. Heinrich Klaasen will captain for the rest of the match."

Television replays on the broadcast showed that Markram likely sustained the injury after diving to stop a ball in the inner circle. He usually bats at No.5 for South Africa, but will not be allowed to come in today until his side have been batting for as long as he has been off the field. However, he can bat if they lose five wickets before that time elapses.

England were bowled out for 179 in 38.2 overs.
