On Sunday (January 19), Cricket Australia provided an injury update on three national team players including stars Steve Smith and Pat Cummins, ahead of a crucial run of fixtures.

Smith picks up BBL elbow injury, Cummins to be monitored

A statement from the board read, "Steve Smith sustained an injury to his right elbow whilst throwing in the field for the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League on Friday. He is preparing to join the test squad in Dubai later this week following further specialist input. Further updates will be shared as they are known.

"Matt Kuhnemann, meanwhile, is recovering from surgery on Friday on a fractured right thumb suffered while playing for the Brisbane Heat last Thursday. He will remain in Australia while the surgical wound heals further. He is planned to resume bowling this week with a view to joining the squad in Sri Lanka if he continues to progress well.

"Pat Cummins is recovering from increased left ankle soreness which was aggravated by high workloads during the Test summer. He will seek specialist rehabilitation advice this week and is likely to require a period of physical preparation and recovery. The NSP [National Selection Panel] will continue to monitor Cummins’ recovery leading into the Champions Trophy."

Kuhnemann's injury came to light on January 16, the day it took place. Smith was in action for the Sydney Sixers against the Sydney Thunder on Friday, January 17. The Sixers had chosen to field first, but only 5.1 overs of play was possible before bad weather forced an abandonment. However, those 31 balls appear to have been enough for Smith to sustain an elbow injury while fielding.

Test and ODI skipper Cummins' workload has been the subject of much discussion throughout Australia's home summer. He took part in two ODIs against Pakistan before playing all five Tests against India – taking up an additional workload during the third Test after Josh Hazlewood was forced to leave the field.

Cummins will not be taking part in the Test series against Sri Lanka, with Smith set to lead in his place. As a result, the fast bowler's next international commitment is the Champions Trophy, which starts in a month's time.

Of the three, Kuhnemann looks the most likely at this stage to miss their next assignment, thanks to the surgery. Australia will hope there is no serious damage to Smith's elbow following consultation with the specialist. If he does miss the tour of Sri Lanka, they will have to replace him not only as a batter, but also as captain.
