Pakistan knocked out of Champions Trophy

Pakistan have been eliminated from the 2025 Champions Trophy following New Zealand's victory over Bangladesh in Rawalpindi today (February 24).

New Zealand were set 237 to chase by Bangladesh after the BlackCaps won the toss and chose to field. Najmul Hossain Shanto top-scored for Bangladesh, making 77 while Michael Bracewell bowled a record spell of 4-26.

In response, Taskin Ahmed cleaned up the centurion from the last game, Will Young, with a beauty in the first over and Nahid Rana got Kane Williamson to edge one behind to the keeper to put New Zealand in a spot of bother. Rachin Ravindra, batting at No.4 for the first time in his ODI career, however, took charge of proceedings and scored a flawless hundred, his fourth in ICC ODI tournaments.

New Zealand finished the game with relative ease despite a squeeze by Bangladesh towards the end, winning by five wickets and more than three overs remaining.

Group A semi-finalists confirmed, Pakistan eliminated

This result signalled the end of the road for Pakistan in CT 2025. India and New Zealand have both won two games now and are on four points, enough to seal their places in the semi-finals of the competition.

Pakistan and Bangladesh, on the other hand, having lost their first two games each, can't match or overtake either India or New Zealand on points and stand eliminated even before their last league game, which incidentally is against each other.

Pakistan are hosting a major ICC tournament for the first time since co-hosting the 1996 ODI World Cup, but will have to contend with getting eliminated at the earliest possible opportunity. It continues a poor run in ICC events for side, who last won the previous edition of the same Champions Trophy back in 2017.

As far as Group B is concerned, South Africa and Australia, at first and second in the standings respectively, face each other in a crucial clash on Tuesday (February 25). England and Afghanistan are yet to get off the mark, and will face each other on Wednesday.
