Against New Zealand at Rawalpindi on February 24, Bangladesh’s Mahmudullah became one of the oldest players to feature in a Champions Trophy match.
One of Bangladesh’s famed quintet whose careers began in the 2000s, spanned all of the 2010s, and spilled over into the 2020s, Mahmudullah is part of Bangladesh’s 2025 Champions Trophy squad. In fact, he is in excellent form in ODIs, following a curious arithmetic progression (0, 1, 2, 3) with 98, 50 not out, 62, 84 not out in his last four innings.
Bangladesh left out Mahmudullah for their tournament opener against India at Dubai, but recalled him for the second match, against New Zealand at Rawalpindi.
At 39 years 20 days, Mahmudullah is now the oldest Bangladeshi to play in the Champions Trophy. He replaced Misbah-ul-Haq at the 10th place. Of the nine men above him, five (including the four oldest cricketers) are from the USA’s only outing, in 2004, while Roland Lefebvre represented the Netherlands in 2002. The other three (Sanath Jayasuriya in 2009, Mohammad Nabi in 2025, Alec Stewart in 2002) are from ICC Full Member nations.
Mahmudullah’s brother-in-law Mushfiqur Rahim is also playing in this match. At 37 years 291 days, he is the second-oldest Bangladeshi at the Champions Trophy. Before this edition, the record was held by Mohammad Rafique (36 years 38 days in 2006). In fact, Mahmudullah is now the oldest Bangladeshi to play in any ICC event.
