India's Virat Kohli equalled a national record on Thursday, during his side's opening match of the 2025 Champions Trophy.
India were put into the field after Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss. The Men in Blue got off to the perfect start as Mohammed Shami removed Soumya Sarkar in the very first over.
The following over, Shanto was dismissed by Harshit Rana, as he slapped a full, wide delivery straight to Kohli at cover – his 155th catch in ODI cricket. Axar Patel was narrowly denied a hat-trick by Rohit Sharma's dropped catch, before Jaker Ali and Towhid Hridoy resurrected Bangladesh's innings.

In the 43rd over, Jaker attempted to take on Shami, but could only sky his shot. Kohli completed a simple catch at long-on, his second of the match and 156th in ODIs – equalling Mohammad Azharuddin's Indian record for catches by an outfielder (i.e. non-wicketkeeper) in the format.
That has also helped Kohli rank joint-third on the all-time list for outfield catches in ODI cricket. Sri Lanka's Mahela Jayawardene is in first with 218, and Australia's Ricky Ponting a distant second with 160.
