Tom Latham celebrates an eighth ODI century with Glenn Phillips

Tom Latham hit his eighth ODI century in New Zealand's Champions Trophy opener against Pakistan in Karachi today (February 19), putting him among legends in record standings.

Latham came in at No.5 in the 17th over of New Zealand's innings after they'd lost three wickets in the previous nine overs. Steadying the ship alongside Will Young, who also scored a century, the two put on a 118-run partnership to take New Zealand past 200 going into the last 10 overs.

After Young was dismissed caught in the deep by Fakhar Zaman off a length delivery from Naseem Shah, Latham put together an even bigger partnership with Glenn Phillips to ensure New Zealand posted Pakistan a 300-plus target. Latham reached his century with a single off Shaheen Afridi off his 90th ball at the crease.

Who has more hundreds at No.5 than Latham?

While it was his eighth hundred overall, it was his fifth batting at No.5. Three of his previous ODI centuries were scored during his time as an opener, a position he has not occupied in the format since 2017.

Latham's five centuries at No.5 put him alongside Eoin Morgan, Shakib Al Hasan, Sikandar Raza and Andrew Symonds, in third place for the most centuries scored in the position in men's ODIs. The only names now ahead of Latham, are legendary South Africa all-rounder AB de Villiers, and India middle-order blitzer Yuvraj Singh.

The century is also a welcome return to form for Latham, who endured a tough start to the year in ODIs. After getting out for one against Sri Lanka in Hamilton, he registered three consecutive ducks in his next three ODIs before breaking the run with a half-century against Pakistan in the tri-series final last week.

Latham finished on 118 off 104 balls as New Zealand ended with 320-5 from 50 overs.
