Mohammed Shami

Mohammed Shami took his sixth ODI five-for in India's opening match of the 2025 Champions Trophy, moving another place up the all-time list.

Shami started off the innings in note-perfect fashion after India were put into field. He dismissed Soumya Sarkar for a duck with the final ball of his first over, leaving Bangladesh 1-1.

He struck again later in his opening spell, this time dismissing captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz chasing a wide delivery and caught at slip by Shubman Gill. By the time the powerplay was done, Bangladesh were in a tricky position, five wickets down after Axar Patel struck twice in as many balls.

After a record-breaking sixth-wicket partnership brought Bangladesh back into the game, Shami was the one who found the breakthrough, dismissing Jaker Ali with an off-cutter and claiming his 200th ODI wicket. Only Mitchell Starc has reached the milestone faster in the history of the format.

From there, Shami cleaned up the tail, bowling Tanzim Hasan Sakib and claiming Taskin Ahmed's wicket to collect his five-for. It's Shami's sixth in ODIs and his first since the 2023 World Cup, which preceded his long lay-off from international cricket. He took three five-fors in that tournament, including 5-18 against Sri Lanka.

He is now in joint sixth on the all-time list for bowlers with the most five-fors in men's ODIs. He is equal with the likes of Wasim Akram and Trent Boult, and one behind Glenn McGrath. The overall record is held by Waqar Younis, who has 13 five-fors in the format.
