Mohammed Shami nearly ended up with the most expensive spell for India in Champions Trophy history, giving away 72 runs against New Zealand in the Champions Trophy 2025 final.
Shami, who opened the bowling with Hardik Pandya, ended up conceding 74 runs – nearly 30 per cent of New Zealand's total – in the final at Dubai. Pandya, too, was expensive conceding 30 from his three overs, as India New Zealand got the bulk of their runs in the first and last ten overs.
The performance of the two quicks was in direct contrast to the spinners, who stifled the flow of runs in the middle overs. Together, Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy and Axar Patel bowled 38 overs, the third-most for India in an ODI. Jadeja, in fact, bowled one of the most economical spells by a spinner in Champions Trophy history, finishing with figures of 1-30 from his ten overs.
Only Umesh Yadav has conceded more runs for India in a Champions Trophy match, giving away 75 against South Africa in the 2013 Champions Trophy. The record for conceding the most runs belongs to Wahab Riaz, who gave away 87 in 8.4 overs against India during the 2017 Champions Trophy.
New Zealand finished on 251-7: if India chase it down, it would be the fifth-highest successful chase in Dubai in an ODI.
