Virat Kohli scored his 24th fifty in a global ICC ODI event, the most by any batter in history, during the India-Australia semi-final clash in the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Kohli walked out at his usual position of No.3 in the run chase of 265 after Shubman Gill departed in the fifth over. He hardly broke into a sweat during his innings despite the dismissal of Rohit Sharma soon after. Kohli stitched together important partnerships with Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel and then KL Rahul, manoeuvring the strike with ease and keeping the run rate ticking.
Kohli scored his 74th ODI fifty in just 52 balls and was looking set for his 52nd ton before a nothing shot saw him fall for 84. India ended up winning by four wickets, with KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja guiding the team through.
The former India skipper continues to break several ODI records: Having become the quickest to 14,000 runs earlier in the tournament, he also latched onto his 336th international outfield catch to create an India record on Tuesday.
With the bat, he made his 24th fifty-plus score in a World Cup or Champions Trophy game, moving past Sachin Tendulkar in the list. During his knock, he also became the second batter to make 8,000 ODI runs in a chase.
Tendulkar had 23 fifty-plus scores across all ICC ODI events, with seven hundreds and 16 fifties in 58 innings, while Kohli overhauled the record in just his 53rd innings. The two are the only batters who have made more than 20 fifties in a world event in the format.
Kohli has six hundreds and 18 fifties overall - He has made five hundreds in the World Cup along with 12 fifties. His ton against Pakistan in the Champions Trophy last week was his first in the tournament.
