Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out midway through the Sydney Test between India and Australia due to a back spasm. Here are the latest updates on his injury and probable comeback date.
After the game hung in the balance on day two of the fifth and final Test, the tourists lost stand-in captain Bumrah owing to an injury. He left the field shortly after lunch before being driven off to the hospital for a scan. Prasidh Krishna later confirmed that Bumrah had been battling back spasms.
The fast bowler later came out to bat when India slipped to 156-8 in the second innings, falling for a three-ball duck. He didn’t bowl for the rest of the match, with the visitors succumbing to a six-wicket defeat.
Bumrah was undoubtedly the biggest positive in India's disappointing 1-3 series defeat which forced them out of contention for the World Test Championship final.
His bowling workload throughout the series has been under scanner as India were overreliant on him for providing breakthroughs. Up until his injury, he bowled 908 deliveries, the second most in the series after Pat Cummins (912).
"A little frustrating (on injury) but sometimes you have to respect your body, and you can't fight your body," Bumrah had said after the match. "Sometimes, you have to accept. Would have loved to bowl on the spiciest wicket of the series. Just had a little discomfort after the first innings."
Despite Bumrah's stellar series coming to a premature end, his 32 wickets in five matches at an average of 13.06 capped off an outstanding year, earning him the Player of the Series.
