India played just three ODIs in the last calendar year, and took a largely second-string outfit to South Africa for an ODI series just after the 2023 World Cup, which means selecting this squad on the basis of form will not be straightforward.
The biggest issue right now, though, is the fitness of star pacer Jasprit Bumrah who picked up a back injury during the Australia Test series, and could miss the group stage of the tournament due to injury. He could find a spot if India think that having him just for the knockout stage is enough.
With India's domestic 50-overs competition, the Vijay Hazare Trophy, set to conclude today, all eyes have been on the tournament – particularly Vidarbha batter Karun Nair, who has scored 752 runs in seven innings, being dismissed just once. There have been calls for him to make a miraculous comeback to the national side, but it is unclear how he would fit in to an already-packed middle-order.

The press conference will be available to watch only in India. It will be on the Star Sports and Sports18 networks on television, and live-streamed on Hotstar.
Previous press conferences have been streamed on Star Sports' YouTube channel as well, but that is yet to be confirmed for this one.
