Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran achieved a unique ODI first during his knock of 177 against England in the Champions Trophy on Wednesday (February 26).
Both sides entered this match knowing that the loser would exit the competition, thanks to the washout between Australia and South Africa yesterday (February 25).
Early signs indicated that that could be Afghanistan, after Jofra Archer ripped through the top-order to account for Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Sediqullah Atal and Rahmat Shah to leave them 39-3 after the first powerplay. Opener Ibrahim Zadran then came together with skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi to begin a rebuilding effort.

The pair moved their side to 81-3 in 20 overs on a good batting track, but then began to step on the gas. Shahidi departed in the 30th over, but Zadran carried on after scoring a half-century, in the company of Azmatullah Omarzai. In the 37th over, Zadran went past the three-figure mark off 106 balls. He then unleashed a fearsome assault on England's frontline bowlers towards the slog overs, accelerating to 177 off 145 balls before being caught on the boundary in the final over.
Zadran's knock is the highest score in Champions Trophy history and the highest-ever by an Afghanistan batter in ODIs – breaking his own record of 162. Still aged just 23 years and 76 days, he is now the only player in ODI history to register two 150-plus scores before the age of 24.
The first player to score 150-plus in an ODI before turning 24 was England's Charlotte Edwards against Ireland in 1997. Chris Gayle (West Indies) was the first man to do so, nearly four years later. The highest score by anyone at this age is 232, by Amelia Kerr for New Zealand against Ireland in 2018.
