Ibrahim Zadran broke his own record for the highest ever individual score for Afghanistan in an ODI today (February 26), in their Champions Trophy fixture against England.
Zadran smashed 177 as Afghanistan scored 325-5 in Lahore - their highest-ever total in the format against England. Having opened the innings, Zadran was forced into his shell early after Jofra Archer took three wickets in the powerplay. By the end of the 10th over, Afghanistan were 39-3 with Zadran and Hashmatullah Shahidi at the crease.
The 23-year-old reached his first 50 off 65 balls, before going through the gears to reach three figures. He put on a century partnership before Shahidi was bowled by Adil Rashid for 40 shortly before Zadran reached his hundred. He went to the milestone with a single off Liam Livingstone, his second 50 scored off 51 balls.

But it was in the last 10 overs of the innings that Zadran put his foot fully on the accelerator. He blasted Archer for four boundaries in his ninth over, heaving a six over midwicket before crashing three consecutive fours. He then slashed another six over long on in Archer's next over, having gone past the 150 mark. That shot also took him past his previous high-score in ODIs, which was 162 scored against Sri Lanka in 2020. That score was also the previous highest for Afghanistan overall in the format.
Zadran was eventually out in the final over of the innings, picking out Archer in the deep at backward square off Livingstone. While his score is Afghanistan's highest, it's quite some way off the highest for other teams. Rohit Sharma's 264 remains the overall record-holder in the format, while New Zealand, West Indies, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia all have double-centurions.
If Afghanistan beat England it will be their second consecutive victory over them in a men's ICC 50-over tournament, after their famous win in the 2023 World Cup.
