Pat Cummins will lead Australia’s 15-man preliminary squad at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 set to be held across Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates in February.
Australia squad for Champions Trophy: Who's in?
The return of Cummins will be encouraging for two-time champions Australia with their captain missing the tour of Sri Lanka later this month because of an ankle injury. The 31-year-old had also carried the problem throughout the Border Gavaskar Trophy where Australia beat India 3-1.
All-rounders Matt Short and Aaron Hardie will participate in an ICC event for the first time after being named in the preliminary squad while Nathan Ellis has been included on the back of his domestic performances after leading Hobart Hurricanes to the Big Bash League final.
Short has featured regularly for Australia in ODIs since David Warner’s retirement in November 2023 while Hardie has 11 ODI caps to his name. Ellis, who has played eight One Day matches, last appeared for Australia in this format against South Africa in September 2023.
Australia squad for Champions Trophy: Who's out?
They are the only three changes to the side that lifted the Cricket World Cup trophy in India with Warner, Cameron Green and Sean Abbott making way.
Jake Fraser-McGurk, however, failed to consolidate a spot in the squad after averaging below 18 in five matches last year.
Australia will also be bolstered by the returns of Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Marsh. While Hazlewood is out with a calf injury, Marsh was excluded from the Test side to compete against Sri Lanka.
Australia are the reigning men’s and women’s ODI world champions as well as the U19 men’s World Cup holders.
Having last won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2009, Australia will face Afghanistan, England and South Africa in Group B and their games will be played across Rawalpindi and Lahore in Pakistan. They will begin their campaign against England on February 22.
