Mohammed Shami is the joint second-fastest to 200 ODI wickets

Playing in his 104th ODI, Mohammed Shami became the joint second-quickest bowler to 200 wickets in the format, during the 2025 Champions Trophy game against Bangladesh.

Shami came into the Bangladesh match with 197 wickets from 103 ODIs. He struck in the first over, having Soumya Sarkar caught behind. In the seventh over (his fourth), Shubman Gill leapt upwards at first slip to take a sharp catch to send Mehidy Hasan Miraz back. Bangladesh, 26-3 at that point, soon slipped to 35-5.

It would have been 35-6 had Rohit Sharma not dropped Jaker Ali first ball and, in the process, deny Axar Patel a hat-trick. Taking advantage, Jaker (68) added 154 for the sixth wicket with Towhid Hridoy (88 at the time of writing).

Shami eventually ended the partnership when Jaker mistimed a slog, and Virat Kohli held a comfortable catch at long-on. He became the eighth Indian to the milestone. At 104 matches, he is also the joint second-fastest to reach there (along with Saqlain Mushtaq). Only Mitchell Starc (102) had taken fewer ODIs to reach 200 wickets.

Shami also smashed the Indian record, Ajit Agarkar’s 133 ODIs, by a considerable margin. Three other Indians – Zaheer Khan (144), Anil Kumble (147), and Javagal Srinath (147) have reached there in fewer than 150 ODIs.

Naturally, the five men at the top of the list also have the best bowling strike rates in the 200-wicket club. Shami heads that list with 25.6 at the time of writing, followed by Starc (26.6), Trent Boult (29.2), Brett Lee (29.4), and Saqlain (30.4).
