David Miller completed a record hundred off the last ball of the second semi-final of the 2025 Champions Trophy in Lahore, but couldn't take South Africa over the line.
Chasing 363, South Africa were always behind the asking rate. Temba Bavuma (56) and Rassie van der Dussen (69) scored half centuries at the top, but they weren't quick enough to put pressure back on New Zealand. Miller came out to bat at No.6 with South Africa needing 196 from 21.2 overs but kept losing partners.
By over 39.3, South Africa had collapsed to 218-8 with the game looking out of their reach. Miller knocked it around with Kagiso Rabada hitting the occasional boundary but it wasn't enough to catch up with the required rate. In the end, it became a race against time for Miller to reach his hundred.
After the 47th over, Miller was batting on 52 off 49, needing another 48 to reach his hundred, which is exactly what he managed to score as South Africa ended on 312-9, eventually losing by 50 runs.
Whose Champions Trophy record did Miller break?
Miller completed his hundred with the last ball of the match, which was the 67th ball he faced. It is now the fastest hundred scored in the history of the Champions Trophy. The previous record belonged to two players: Virender Sehwag and Josh Inglis.
Sehwag scored a 77-ball ton against England in the 2002 Champions Trophy, while Inglis did the same against the same opponents earlier in the current edition.
Among South Africa players, it is the 11th fastest hundred in ODIs and the fastest one scored by Miller, eclipsing his 69-ball ton against Australia in 2016. Overall, it was the joint-70th quickest century in men's ODIs.

Second hundred in global semi-finals
This is also the second consecutive global ODI semi-final where Miller has scored a hundred, having also scored one in a losing cause against Australia in the 2023 World Cup semi-final in Kolkata.
With this effort, Miller has become the first South Africa player in an elite list of six batters who have scored more than one hundred in World Cup and Champions Trophy semi-finals and finals combined.
Sourav Ganguly is the only one among them to have scored three centuries in these knockout games.
